The season splits into three distinct moods. Late November and early December are calm, crisp and comfortably bookable a few days ahead. The Christmas fortnight is the peak: full boats, full bridges, a genuine festival atmosphere. January is cold, dark and beautifully empty.
Within a single evening, 17:00 to 19:00 gives you the deepest blue sky behind the artworks — the best light for photographs. After 21:00 the canals empty out and the reflections get noticeably cleaner.
Avoid the evenings of 25 December and 31 December if you dislike crowds; avoid the first hour after sunset on a Saturday for the same reason.
Whatever week you choose, book the sailing a little earlier than you think you need to. Tickets for the winter season open in October and the weekend slots are the first to disappear.
